It’s no secret that filters on apps like Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok have become incredibly popular. With the latest AI technology, these filters can make you look almost unrecognizable from your real-life self. And while they may be fun to play around with, there’s growing concern about the negative impact they’re having on our mental and physical health.
The Impact of Social Media Filters on Mental Health and Self-Esteem
Let’s start with mental health. It’s no secret that social media can be a breeding ground for comparison and low self-esteem. And filters that make you look like an entirely different person can only exacerbate those feelings. It’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling like you’re not good enough if you can’t live up to the unrealistic beauty standards set by these filters.
And that’s not to mention the physical toll that trying to achieve those standards can take. Filters may be convenient, but they’re also setting incredibly high standards for our appearance. This can lead to extreme measures like plastic surgery, fillers, and toxic makeup that can have serious consequences for our health.
Let’s break it down. Conventional cosmetics can contain toxic chemicals that can be absorbed through our skin and into our bloodstream. Injectable fillers like poly-L-lactic acid and polymethylmethacrylate can cause infections, scarring, and other serious side effects. And Botox, while it may reduce the appearance of wrinkles, injects toxins into our bodies that cause paralysis.
And then there’s plastic surgery, which is becoming increasingly popular among women who want to look more like their filtered selves. While it may seem like a quick fix, plastic surgery comes with its own set of risks and complications, from abnormal scarring to blood clots to anesthesia complications.
Combatting the Negative Effects of Social Media Filters on Mental and Physical Health
So what can we do about it? For starters, we need to eliminate the filters that are causing so much harm. It’s time to start embracing our natural selves and focusing on what truly matters: our inner beauty and worth.
We also need to seek out support for our mental and physical health. Whether that’s reaching out to a friend, or joining a support network, there are steps we can take to feel more authentic, embodied, and whole.
In short, social media filters may seem harmless, but they’re having a real impact on our health and wellbeing. It’s time to take a step back, reevaluate our priorities, and focus on what really matters.
