For those following me, you know that I’ve been renovating my home recently to ensure I live what I preach—a non-toxic lifestyle. Part of this process has included cleaning my 100% wool rugs, and I was in for a shock!
The Hidden Dangers of Rug Pads
During the cleaning process, I discovered that the underlayment my carpets were covering is made of recycled plastic. While recycling can be beneficial for the environment, plastic of any kind has no business in my non-toxic home. This discovery was alarming because these recycled plastic pads can be a source of harmful toxins.
Cleaning my rugs revealed dust buildup of dried skin, dirt particles, and other substances inevitably tracked in from the outside world. This dust buildup can quickly get into my family’s bodies and cause inflammation, allergic reactions, breathing issues, and more. It was clear that the dust and the toxic underlayments had to go.
The Health Risks of Recycled Plastic Pads
Recycled plastic pads and other toxic underlayments can release microplastics and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into your home. These substances can disrupt hormones, cause allergic reactions, and have been linked to cancers and other serious health issues. I do not want my family to be constantly exposed to these toxins.
Non-Toxic Dad’s Rug Tips & Recommendation
So, what should you do with those recycled plastic underlayments? Here’s what I recommend:
- Swap for Felted Wool Pads: Replace the recycled plastic pads with 100% felted wool pads. These pads are free of microplastics, other toxins, and glues that can cause hormonal disruption. They do not emit VOCs that cause allergies, are linked to cancers, and cause other health issues.
- Regular Cleaning: Ensure your rugs and pads are regularly cleaned to prevent dust buildup. This reduces the risk of inhaling harmful particles and keeps your home environment healthy.
- Choose Non-Toxic Materials: When renovating or updating your home, always opt for non-toxic materials. This includes natural fiber rugs and non-toxic underlayments.
Creating a Healthier Home
Living a non-toxic lifestyle means being aware of the hidden dangers in everyday items like rugs and making informed choices to protect your family’s health. By swapping out toxic rug pads for felted wool and maintaining a clean environment, you can significantly reduce exposure to harmful substances in your home.
Your home should be a safe haven, free from the hidden toxins that can impact your health. By taking these steps, you can create a healthier, more comfortable living space for you and your family.
