Toxic Drinks I Would Never Buy at Target (And What I Choose Instead)

Walk through any grocery store beverage aisle today, and almost everything is marketed as “healthy” now. Sports drinks promise hydration. Energy drinks promise focus. Juice drinks promise vitamins. Enhanced waters promise optimization.

The packaging looks cleaner than ever: earth tones, athletic branding, words like “natural,” “functional,” and “essential” printed across bottles designed to look like wellness products rather than soda.

But flip those bottles around and read the ingredient label, and a very different story usually appears.

A huge percentage of modern beverages are still built around the same formula the food industry has relied on for decades: massive amounts of sugar, synthetic additives, artificial dyes, cheap flavor systems, and stimulants dressed up as wellness. As someone with an environmental science background, I’ve spent years paying attention to how chemical exposure accumulates across daily life. Drinks are among the easiest places to reduce that load, especially since many of the worst offenders offer little real benefit.

Here are three I consistently avoid at Target, and what I reach for instead.

Why Beverages Deserve More Scrutiny Than Most People Give Them

Liquids are absorbed faster than solid food. Sugar spikes quicker. Caffeine hits harder. Artificial ingredients bypass some of the slower digestive processes involved with whole foods.

That makes drinks a surprisingly significant daily source of:

  • Added sugar and synthetic sweeteners
  • Artificial dyes and preservatives
  • Stimulants and ultra-processed additives

Many people who eat reasonably well are still consuming enormous amounts of processed ingredients through beverages every single day, coffee creamers, sports drinks, sweetened teas, juice cocktails, vitamin Waters, without fully registering it.

The modern beverage industry has become very good at disguising ultra-processed drinks as wellness products. Front-label claims are marketing. The ingredient panel is reality.

Gatorade: The “Hydration” Drink That Often Works Against Hydration

The sugar problem. A standard bottle can contain roughly 8.5 teaspoons of sugar or more, and liquid sugar is one of the fastest ways to spike blood glucose and insulin. Unlike whole fruit, there’s no fiber slowing absorption. The result is a rapid rise in energy followed by the familiar crash.

The artificial dye problem. Many conventional sports drinks rely on synthetic colorings, Red 40, Blue 1, and Yellow 5, that exist almost entirely for visual marketing appeal. Many people focus on the total caffeine amount on the label while ignoring how multiple sources of stimulants can amplify the physiological effect beyond what that number suggests.

This matters because a lot of people already live in a chronically overstimulated state: poor sleep, high stress, constant screen exposure, elevated cortisol. Layering heavily caffeinated beverages on top of that all day produces the “tired but wired” feeling that’s become so common.

The sucralose problem. Celsius uses sucralose, one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners in modern beverages. Regulatory agencies consider it safe within approved limits, but ongoing research continues to examine its potential effects on gut bacteria, glucose regulation, and metabolic health. For people trying to reduce cumulative exposure to artificial sweeteners over years of daily consumption, it’s a reasonable concern.

Juice is still a concentrated sugar source compared to whole fruit; no version of juice is nutritionally equivalent to eating the fruit itself. But there’s a real difference between minimally processed organic juice and a heavily sweetened juice cocktail built primarily around added sugar and flavor systems.

The Bigger Problem: Wellness Marketing Has Gotten Very Good at Deception

Words like “hydration,” “performance,” “recovery,” “immunity,” and “focus” now appear on beverage labels regardless of the quality of the ingredients. Companies understand consumers want healthier products, so instead of necessarily improving formulations, many simply improve branding.

The packaging gets cleaner. The messaging becomes wellness-oriented. The ingredients stay ultra-processed.

Your body doesn’t respond to branding. It responds to what you actually consume.
