Costco Laundry Products Worth Skipping (And What to Use Instead)

Laundry products deserve particular attention because what you use to wash your clothes can leave residues on fabric, contribute fragrances and chemical compounds to indoor air, and affect what you and your household are exposed to throughout the day.

None of this requires replacing everything in your laundry room immediately. A more practical approach is to identify what you use most frequently and find simpler alternatives when it’s time to replace them. Here are three laundry-related purchases I’d personally skip at Costco, and what I’d choose instead.

Scent boosters are designed to make laundry smell stronger and maintain that “fresh laundry” scent long after the wash cycle ends. That’s essentially the entire point of the product, and that’s where the concern starts.

Fragrance formulations can contain numerous individual ingredients that aren’t fully disclosed on the label. When you add a scent booster to an already-fragranced detergent, you’re intentionally increasing the amount of fragrance deposited on your clothing. And your clothes spend hours against your skin: bedding, pajamas, towels, underwear, and everyday wear.
