Most people think about food when they hear “toxic exposure.” Pesticides, additives, cookware, cleaning products, and drinking water. Clothing rarely makes the list, even though we spend most of our lives surrounded by it.

Polyester is one of the most widely used fibers in modern clothing, inexpensive, durable, wrinkle-resistant, and extremely common in T-shirts, pajamas, underwear, and children’s clothing alike.
It’s a synthetic polymer derived from petrochemical feedstocks. That doesn’t mean the fabric is simply “plastic chemicals on your skin,” but it does mean you’re working with a fundamentally synthetic material rather than a natural fiber. Synthetic fabrics can also trap heat and sweat against the body differently than natural fibers, which can be uncomfortable and may contribute to skin irritation for some people.
The practical strategy: when buying new clothing, especially underwear, sleepwear, and everyday basics, prioritize natural fibers.
Watch out for “cotton blend” labeling. A garment labeled this way might contain a small percentage of cotton alongside a substantial amount of polyester. Read the actual percentage breakdown on the tag rather than relying on the word “cotton” appearing on the front.
Rayon, Viscose, and Modal: “Natural-Feeling” Isn’t the Same as Natural
Rayon, viscose, and modal are often marketed as natural-feeling fabrics, and they can be genuinely soft and comfortable. But these regenerated cellulose fibers are derived from plant-based materials and undergo significant chemical processing before becoming wearable textiles.
Describing them as simply “natural” is misleading. The manufacturing process, finished garment, and any residual chemicals all matter. Some regenerated-cellulose textiles do have environmental advantages over certain conventional synthetics, depending on how they’re produced. Still, if your priority is minimizing chemically intensive processing, untreated natural fibers are the more straightforward choice.
The “Stain-Resistant” and “Water-Repellent” Labels Are Worth Questioning
Convenience claims: “stain-resistant,” “water-resistant,” “easy-care,” “wrinkle-free,” sound appealing. But these performance characteristics usually come from chemical treatments applied to the fabric.
The biggest category to pay attention to: PFAS.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are used to create water, oil, and stain resistance in textiles and many other consumer products. PFAS are sometimes called “forever chemicals” because many are highly persistent in both the environment and the human body. Certain PFAS have been associated with immune system effects and increased cancer risk at sufficient exposure levels, though risk depends on the specific compound and amount of exposure.
A simple decision rule: if you’re choosing between two otherwise similar garments and one has been specifically treated for stain or water resistance. At the same time, the other hasn’t; the untreated option is the simpler choice for everyday wear.
The same logic applies to “wrinkle-free” and “permanent press.” Some textile treatments for wrinkle resistance have historically involved formaldehyde-based resins or similar chemicals. Choosing fabrics that don’t naturally require special finishing and accepting that linen and cotton will wrinkle is the simpler approach.
Synthetic Activewear: Higher Exposure During Higher Sweat
Workout clothing is where synthetic fabrics are most dominant, and for a real functional reason: polyester, nylon, and elastane are lightweight, stretchy, and move moisture away from the body more effectively than cotton for high-intensity exercise.
But activewear also deserves closer attention because you’re wearing it during periods of increased sweating and elevated body temperature, conditions that can affect how chemicals interact with skin.
Research has investigated chemicals, including bisphenols, in clothing and textiles, and raised questions about chemical migration from synthetic textiles under sweating conditions. Althoughthe area is still developing, people who want to minimize potential exposure have alternatives.
Options worth exploring:
- Merino wool activewear for lower-intensity activities (running, hiking, yoga)
- Organic cotton for gym training where stretch matters less
- Hemp-blend activewear for versatile everyday movement
For high-intensity exercise where performance fabrics genuinely matter, prioritize brands that provide transparency about textile chemistry and explicitly avoid PFAS treatments.
The Underwear Rule: Start Here If You Make Only One Change
If you change one thing in your wardrobe, make it underwear.
Underwear is worn for long periods and sits directly against sensitive skin; that makes fabric choice more relevant here than for a jacket worn over three layers. Look for at least 95% cotton, with the remaining percentage typically being a small amount of elastane for stretch. Organic cotton is an additional step if you want to prioritize how the fiber was grown.
The same principle applies to bras, undershirts, and other base layers.
One thing worth being accurate about: some studies explored potential relationships between synthetic underwear and reproductive parameters. What we can say with confidence is that using breathable natural fibers and avoiding unnecessary chemical finishes is a reasonable approach for anyone looking to reduce daily exposure to textiles.
Sleepwear: 8 Hours of Skin Contact Every Night
Eight hours is a significant amount of time for fabric to stay in direct contact with skin. For that reason, sleepwear is one of the easiest and most impactful places to prioritize natural fibers.
Look for: cotton, organic cotton, linen, or wool, depending on your climate and whether you sleep hot or cold.
You don’t need expensive, specialized “organic pajamas.” A simple cotton T-shirt and cotton shorts may be a better choice than a synthetic sleepwear set marketed with a long list of performance claims.
Dyes and Finishing Chemicals: The Layer Underneath the Fiber
Fiber composition isn’t the only consideration. Textile dyes and finishing chemicals can also contribute to exposure.
Modern textile dyes vary considerably in composition, and manufacturing regulations are intended to limit the use of harmful substances. Still, some individuals develop allergic contact dermatitis from certain dyes, particularly darker, intensely colored garments. If specific clothing consistently causes itching or skin irritation, the dye or finishing treatment may be worth investigating.
The most practical habit is to wash new clothing before wearing it. Washing removes some residual manufacturing chemicals, excess dye, and finishing agents from the fabric surface. It’s not a complete detox, but it’s a free, simple step that reduces whatever is loosely present on a new garment.
Secondhand Clothing: A Practical Lower-Exposure Option
Buying secondhand offers an underappreciated advantage: clothing that’s been worn and washed many times has already shed much of its manufacturing residue and surface treatments.
For everyday cotton clothing in particular, secondhand shopping is a practical way to reduce both costs and exposure to chemical finishes, which are highest when garments are new. Always wash secondhand clothing before wearing it, especially pieces worn directly against the skin.
A Note on “Organic” Clothing
Organic cotton is a solid choice, but don’t assume the word “organic” means the finished garment contains no synthetic chemicals. Organic certification primarily addresses how the agricultural fiber was grown. The finished garment can still contain synthetic dyes, elastic, finishes, threads, and other materials.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is a more comprehensive certification because it addresses processing and restricted substances beyond the farming stage. It’s one of the more reliable labels when evaluating whether a textile has been manufactured with greater chemical oversight.
No certification means a garment contains absolutely no chemicals, but these labels provide meaningful additional confidence compared to unverified “natural” marketing claims.
The Simple Decision Framework
When you’re standing in a store or shopping online, you don’t need to investigate every chemical used in manufacturing. Ask these questions:
- What’s the fiber? Prioritize cotton, linen, hemp, or wool for close-to-skin garments.
- What percentage? A “Cotton blend” with 30% cotton is a very different garment from one with 95% cotton.
- Are there performance claims? “Stain-resistant,” “water-repellent,” “wrinkle-free,” “odor-resistant,” and “antimicrobial” each signal chemical treatment.
- Is there a certification? GOTS or OEKO-TEX Standard 100 indicates the product has been screened for harmful substances.
