My daughter had practice in 15 minutes, and I wasn’t going to give her a packaged sports drink. So I made her this instead.

Five simple ingredients. A few minutes to mix. A homemade alternative to the brightly colored drinks that have become a staple of practices, games, and hot summer days, and one where I know exactly what’s in it.

The 5-Ingredient Homemade Electrolyte Drink

Makes approximately 8 cups (about 2 liters)

  • 8 cups water
  • 4 tablespoons honey
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 small pinches of cream of tartar
  • 4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Combine all ingredients, mix thoroughly until the honey and salt are fully dissolved, then pour into a glass or stainless-steel bottle. Mixing with warm water first makes the honey dissolve more easily, chill afterward if preferred.

Water – The Foundation

Water handles the core hydration work. Everything else complements it by providing carbohydrates, sodium, potassium, and flavor. Adequate fluid intake remains the most important factor in hydration.

Sea Salt – Replacing Sodium

Sodium is the primary electrolyte lost through sweat and one of the most important to replace during extended exercise. It supports fluid balance and normal muscle and nerve function. The ½ teaspoon here provides a meaningful amount without making the drink taste salty.

Cream of Tartar – A Simple Potassium Source

Cream of tartar is potassium bitartrate; it provides potassium, the other key electrolyte lost through sweat. Two small pinches are all this recipe needs. More is not better here. If you have kidney problems or take medications that affect potassium levels, discuss this with your healthcare provider before using.

Lemon – Flavor, Vitamin C, and Plant Compounds

Lemon juice makes the whole drink taste refreshing and worth drinking. It also contributes vitamin C and flavonoids. Without it, you’ve got lightly sweetened, salted water, fine functionally, but not something most kids or adults are going to reach for on a hot afternoon. Adjust to taste.

When an Electrolyte Drink Makes Sense (and When It Doesn’t)

You probably don’t need one for:

  • A 30-minute walk or light workout

It becomes more useful for:

  • Long practices or training sessions (60+ minutes)

Food Is an Electrolyte Source Too

Electrolytes don’t only come in a bottle. Potassium is abundant in potatoes, beans, leafy greens, bananas, avocados, and yogurt. Sodium is naturally present in many foods and is commonly added during cooking.

A homemade electrolyte drink complements a real-food diet; it doesn’t replace it. If you’re eating well and staying hydrated through the day, you’re already replenishing electrolytes between workouts.

Why Homemade Over Gatorade?

Gatorade was developed in 1965 to help athletes replace water and electrolytes lost through sweat. The original concept was sound. The modern version is formulated around considerably more: taste, color, shelf life, branding, and consumer appeal, along with ingredients most health-conscious families would rather skip:

  • Artificial dyes (Red 40, Blue 1, Yellow 5)
